Progress on the new Waller Boathouse – 10/27/11

28 10 2011

The contractor is making excellent progress on the new Waller Boathouse, part of the Waller Creek Tunnel project.  These were a few pictures that we took yesterday when we were picking up tools at our nearby tool warehouse for a volunteer workday today (Thanks to AMD employees!).  We had to hold the camera above our head to clear the construction fence so please forgive the non-centered pictures…

It’s Open: La Boite Deux at Old Bakery Park on Congress Avenue!

24 10 2011

Update: La Boite Deux is now open (Tue, 10/25 is their first day!)

The Austin Parks Foundation is pleased to announce a pilot project with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Dept.  We’ve entered into a six month (with a six month extension) agreement with La Boite Cafe to open their second location at 1006 Congress Ave, right next door to the Old Bakery Art Gallery, which offer arts and craft made by local artists 50 years and up. La Boite Deux is located on the south side of the bakery in the small city park that is there.

All fees paid by La Boite to the Austin Parks Foundation will go into improvements for the park itself, including planting, mulching, tree work, path work and more.  This is a pilot project to see if the Parks Foundation can put funds earned directly back into parks like the Old Bakery and help out the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Dept with the growing amount of work that they have.   La Boite hopes to open very soon – stay tuned.

Public Comment Meetings – New City of Austin Invasive Species Management Plan

17 10 2011

A working group, consisting of the City of Austin, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and representatives from Keep Austin Beautiful, Austin Parks Foundation, and the Austin Invasive Species Coalition has put together an Invasive Plant Management Plan for the city of Austin. When enacted this plan will be the first municipal plan in Texas and the second nationwide, after Portland, Oregon.

The Plan, currently in draft form and open for public review, aims to identify and quantify the ecological and economic impact of invasive species create and to identify solutions that the City of Austin can implement for effective invasive species management on a city-wide basis.

The plan, field resources book, and associated documents and appendices can be viewed here: www.wildflower.org/docs_coa/

Your input is welcome and encouraged! Public comments will be solicited online and at two public meetings on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and Thursday, Nov. 3, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at the One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Rd. (Room 325), Austin, TX

Barton Creek Greenbelt Update – Oct 14, 2011

14 10 2011

Volunteers hard at work on National Public Lands Day, Sept 24th

With the arrival of “fall” in central Texas, we continue in our efforts on Barton Creek Greenbelt.  Our Barton Creek Trail Corps Crew, made up of our five amazing e-corps members, will be finishing up their work just before Thanksgiving, but they are still hard at work every weekday and we’re getting more volunteer workdays scheduled and just today, we enjoyed the help of 130 volunteers from Pearson Education, The Entrepreneurs Foundation of Central Texas and CA Technologies who helped us cut, yank, haul and stack more invasive trees and plants in both morning and afternoon sessions on Barton Creek Greenbelt.

Since last September, we’ve now had the help of 1,740 volunteers working 4240 hours at 24 separate volunteer workdays on Barton Creek Greenbelt.  We have a number of additional workdays planned including one on Saturday, November 19th at the Hill of Life (sign up here)

In the next few weeks, we’ll be compiling all of our results, lessons learned and additional photos and stories of our work, but we do know that while we won’t be able to have a dedicated crew out on Barton Creek Greenbelt next year, we will continue to have many volunteer events and workdays to continue the efforts that we have begun in 2011.  So, stay tuned.

Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston

5 10 2011

With a free late afternoon to wander, I went to the Rose Kennedy Greenway in downtown Boston to check it out. The other times I’ve been here it’s been (a) pouring rain or (b) covered in lots of snow, it was great to be out there on a 65 degree sunny October afternoon.  While the regular markets and other events weren’t happening today, it was still pretty great.

For those of you that don’t know, this was previously the site of a six elevated freeway that was replaced by the big dig back in the 1990s / early 2000s.

Our thanks to Be The Change Volunteers

1 10 2011

We would like to thank Be the Change Austin and all of the volunteers (several hundred) that came out and volunteered with us and the Montopolis Greenbelt Association to help us in our efforts to continue to clean-up the growing greenbelt.  They worked hard and we pulled out a lot more trash and debris.  Thank you so much!
