The tenth annual Project Build A Park, an annual event put on by Austin Community College’s office of student life in conjunction with the Austin Parks Foundation, the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Dept, Waterloo Disc Golf and Southeast Austin Trails & Greenways (SEATAG) is this Saturday, November 5th from 9 am to noon and we need more volunteers!  Guerrero-Colorado River Park is under going a big expansion but we need help in spreading mulch, picking up trash and helping cut back from vines and bamboo along the trails, the under construction disc golf course and along the shoreline of the Colorado River.

We took a short field trip with Gene and Mike of PARD today to visit the huge clean-up of the future disc golf course area at Guerrero-Colorado River Park.  This is in the area immediately east of the Country Club Creek Trail and Krieg Fields.

There is a lot of old construction debris – mostly concrete, but a lot of good rock and stones that will be used as part of the design.  There’s a lot of dead limb pruning on the many trees out there, most of which are hackberries.

The exception is a huge Pecan – at least 50 inches in diameter on the edge of the park land that will become a beautiful admired feature.

At Long Last – Next Phase of Guerrero-Colorado River Park

Just posted on the City of Austin website (7/23/09):

The City Council authorized execution of a construction contract for improvements to Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Bend Park. This project is part of the 1998 Bond referendum and will include two multi-use sports fields, open areas, parking, driveways, lighting, a group picnic plaza and pavilion, a memorial to Roy G. Guerrero, trails, a playscape, restroom facilities, drainage improvements and public art.

The Austin Parks Foundation was the funder and sponsor of the original conceptual masterplan for this park in the late 1990s/early 2000s that led to the design and plans for this first phase.  Guerrero-Colorado River Park is equal in size to Zilker Park – over 300 acres and while much of it will left in a more natural state – it will offer more ballfields, trails, picnic areas and playscapes for all to enjoy.  This is the last major park project to be completed using 1998 city bond funding.
