Since 2002, when a research document identified Republic Square as the 1870s location for the Mexican community’s Diez y Seis celebrations, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a kick-off celebration at Republic Square to commemorate the historic ties of the park to Diez y Seis.

Movies begin at dusk and are presented by the Austin Parks Foundation
At 1:30 pm today at the grand opening of the newest Amplify Credit Union branch at 607 Congress Avenue, Amplify President & CEO Paul Trylko will announce a $12,000 donation to the Austin Parks Foundation for the purchase of the first Imagination Playground in a Box for Austin. The Austin Parks Foundation will offer the portable playground at events at Republic Square and other parks in Austin beginning in early 2011.
We’re very excited about this donation, we saw an early prototype two years ago at a urban parks conference in Pittsburgh and knew we had to get one. We’re very grateful to Amplify for making this possible and offering to work with us to bring it to parks in Austin.
We’ll be purchasing the rugged version and storing it nearby Republic Square. The units are manufactured individually and take a few months to complete, so we’ll be ordering it later this fall and expecting delivery in early January 2011.
As we announced yesterday, due to huge amount of rain and the really soggy conditions of Republic Square, we’ve had to cancel the showing the Wizard. Sadly, we are unable to find a substitute date to show it, so the next Movie at Republic Square is the Last Starfighter on Wednesday, September 15th at dusk.
Our thanks to Daniel and his crew of volunteers for spreading a big truckload of mulch on Saturday – the Auction Oaks and all of our plants will be a lot happier with the Rain on Friday, mulch on Sat and more rain (a lot more) today.
The Movie at Republic Square for Wed, 9/7, the Wizard, has been postponed. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is determining the best course of action. We’ll keep you posted.

So, ride your bike instead of driving! (Parking is available on streets surrounding the park) The movie will begin at dusk (around 8:30 pm). Bring the family, pets on leash, and a picnic and make an evening of it.
We’re thrilled to announce the return of free Movies to Republic Square. Shows begin at dusk, bring lawn chairs, picnics and pets on leash. If you haven’t visited Republic Square since January, please come and check out the new deck and releveled site.
